History: The Atlanta Chiefs were a soccer team based out of Atlanta, Georgia that played in the NPSL and NASL from 1967 to 1972. The Atlanta Chiefs were the brainchild of Dick Cecil, then Vice President of the Atlanta Braves, the MLB baseball franchise who were the Chiefs' owners. Cecil was intrigued with the 1966 World Cup in England and decided that a professional soccer team would add valuable events for Atlanta Stadium. Cecil was in charge of such as concerts including the Beatles. Cecil proceeded to travel through Europe and Africa signing players including Kaizer Motaung as well as Phil Woosnam, Vic Crowe, Peter McParland of Aston Villa. Kaizer Chiefs FC, currently active club in the South African Premier Soccer League was founded by former Chiefs player, Kaizer Motaung, deriving their name and logo from that of the Atlanta Chiefs.
While the Chiefs were one of only a few clubs to survive the 1969 season, they lasted only a few more years. The club renamed itself the Atlanta Apollos after it was sold to the owners of the Atlanta Hawks in 1973 and played at Bobby Dodd Stadium that season.
The Atlanta Chiefs name and logo (altered slightly) were revived in 1979 when the Colorado Caribous franchise moved to Atlanta, with Cecil and Ted Turner as owners. The team again played at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium for three seasons and also at Omni Coliseum for two NASL Indoor seasons until folding after the 1981 season.

Baltimore Bays

History: The first Baltimore Bays were a professional soccer team based out of Baltimore, Maryland. It was one of ten charter members of the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) in 1967. The team would become a part of the North American Soccer League (NASL), which was the result of a merger between the NPSL and the rival United Soccer Association (USA). The owner was Jerold Hoffberger, who also held the same capacity with the National Brewing Company and Major League Baseball's Baltimore Orioles.

Boston Beacons

History: Boston Beacons were a United States soccer team from Boston. In 1968 they were founding members of the North American Soccer League but folded after just one season. The Beacons were actually a relaunch of the United Soccer Association team Boston Rovers.
Chicago Mustangs

History: The Chicago Mustangs were an American professional soccer team based out of Chicago, Illinois that was a charter member of the United Soccer Association (USA) in 1967. The league was made up of teams imported whole from foreign leagues. The Chicago club was actually Cagliari Calcio from Italy. The franchise was owned by Arthur Allyn Jr., the owner of Artnell Corporation and Major League Baseball's Chicago White Sox.
Following the 1967 season, the USA merged with the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) to form the North American Soccer League (NASL) with the teams from the former USA having to create their rosters from scratch. After 1968, the Mustangs became a semi-pro team and eventually became a B-Team/feeder team to the Chicago Sting.
Cleveland Stokers

History: The Cleveland Stokers were a soccer team based out of Cleveland, Ohio that played in the United Soccer Association during 1967 and the North American Soccer League in 1968.
The United league was made up of teams imported from foreign leagues. The 1967 Cleveland roster was actually Stoke City F.C. from England. Following the 1967 season, the USA merged with the National Professional Soccer League to form the North American Soccer League with the teams from the former USA having to create their rosters from scratch.
The franchise was originally acquired by Cleveland Indians baseball club principal owner Vernon Stouffer and club president Gabe Paul in August 1966. They sold the Stokers to a group led by Cleveland attorney Howard Metzenbaum and business partner, Alva "Ted" Bonda, the first week of January 1968.
Dallas Tornado

History: Dallas Tornado were a soccer team based in Dallas that played in the NASL. The franchise was one of the original clubs that played in the United Soccer Association, one of the two precursors to the NASL, in 1967. In fact the USA was made up of international clubs playing in U.S. cities as American teams. The team that played as the Dallas Tornado were Dundee United of the Scottish Football League.

Detroit Cougars

History: The Detroit Cougars were a soccer team based out of Detroit, Michigan that played in the United Soccer Association. The league was made up of teams imported from foreign leagues. The Detroit club consisted of players from Glentoran F.C. of the (Northern) Irish Football League.
Houston Stars

History: The Houston Stars were a soccer team based out of Houston, Texas that played in the United Soccer Association. The league was made up of teams imported from foreign leagues. The Houston club was actually Bangu Atlético Clube from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They were owned by Roy Hofeinz, owner of the Houston Astros and played their home matches at the Astrodome, making them the first ever soccer team to play its matches indoors.
Kansas City Spurs

History: The Kansas City Spurs were a soccer team who played in the North American Soccer League, based in Kansas City, Missouri. They played their home games at Kansas City Municipal Stadium, former home of the Kansas City Chiefs. The club was previously known as the Chicago Spurs of the National Professional Soccer League, which after the 1967 season, merged with the rival United Soccer Association to form the NASL. The Spurs left for Kansas City to avoid competition with the Chicago Mustangs, who came over from the old USA.
Los Angeles Wolves

History: Los Angeles Wolves are a former United States professional soccer team, owned by Jack Kent Cooke, that played for two seasons during the 1960s. In 1967 they played in the United Soccer Association, finishing as champions, and in 1968 they were founding members of the North American Soccer League.

New York Generals

History: The New York Generals were a soccer team based out of New York that played in the non-FIFA sanctioned National Professional Soccer League. Their colors were gold and green (similar to the New York Cosmos colors) and they were owned by RKO General, then owners of WOR-TV.
Following the 1967 season, the NPSL merged with the United Soccer Association to form the North American Soccer League. It would be the Generals who would represent New York in the NASL in 1968, as the USA's New York Skyliners folded. The Generals played only that 1968 NASL season before closing up shop.
Oakland Clippers

History: The Oakland Clippers were a soccer team based out of Oakland, California that played in the non-FIFA sanctioned National Professional Soccer League (NPSL).
The Clippers brought the first-ever national professional championship in any sport to the City of Oakland. Following the 1967 season, it joined the newly formed North American Soccer League (NASL), the result of the merger between the NPSL and the United Soccer Association (USA). From September 1968 to June 1969 the Oakland Clippers, now playing as the California Clippers, played an independent schedule against top foreign club teams while waiting for the North American Soccer League to become reconstituted.
San Diego Toros

History: The San Diego Toros were a soccer team who played in the North American Soccer League, based in San Diego, California. They played their home games at Balboa Stadium, previously the home of the San Diego Chargers. The club was previously known as the Los Angeles Toros.
St. Louis Stars

History: The St. Louis Stars were the first ever professional soccer team in St. Louis. The team was headed by Bob Hermann who later went on to create the Hermann Trophy, college soccer's version of the Heisman Trophy.

Toronto Falcons

History: The Toronto Falcons were a soccer team based out of Toronto. They played only two years, 1967 in the NPSL and 1968 in the NASL.
Vancouver Royals

History: The Vancouver Royal Canadians were a soccer team based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada that played in the United Soccer Association. The league was made up of teams imported from foreign leagues. The Vancouver club was actually Sunderland A.F.C. of English Football League.
Following the 1967 season, the USA merged with the National Professional Soccer League to form the North American Soccer League with the teams from the former USA having to create their rosters from scratch. The San Francisco Golden Gate Gales franchise folded and their owners bought a controlling interest in the Royal Canadians renaming them the Vancouver Royals.
Washington Whips

History: The Washington Whips were a soccer team based in Washington, D.C. that played in the United Soccer Association. The league was made up of teams imported from foreign leagues. The Washington club was actually Aberdeen F.C. from Scotland.
Following the 1967 season, the USA merged with the National Professional Soccer League to form the North American Soccer League with the teams from the former USA having to create their rosters from scratch. The team's owner was Earl Foreman, later owner of the Virginia Squires of the American Basketball Association and president of the original Major Indoor Soccer League.
